Virginia alumnus offers US internships for students

Dr Paul Carter (MSc and PhD Electrical Engineering & Electronics 1988 and 1991)The founder of one of the wireless industry’s leading companies has become one of our first graduates to offer internships for the University’s students in the United States.

Following a visit to his old department in the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, Dr Paul Carter (MSc and PhD Electrical Engineering & Electronics 1988 and 1991) was so keen to support our activities that he offered to provide internships for engineering students at Global Wireless Solutions Inc. (GWS), the Virginia-based independent benchmarking company he founded in 1996.

Paul has also made a $1,000 donation to University of Liverpool in America Inc. and has offered to assist with alumni activity in the metropolitan Washington DC region and along the US east coast. The University is grateful to Paul for his support.
Paul explained: “It’s important to me to be able to give something back to the University of Liverpool and to give young students the same opportunities I had.  It’s no secret that there’s a shortage of talented, technical professionals, so providing internships to the University’s engineering students is my personal contribution to easing this situation.”

Aged 45, Paul is a successful two-time entrepreneur. His 170-strong GWS team has already driven six million miles (the equivalent of 11 round trips to the moon) collecting data through more than 4,000 city drive tests to assess the performance of competing wireless networks in the United States and internationally.

In addition to GWS, Paul’s latest business venture is as the founder and president of MapHook, a company that has developed the location-based social networking application of the same name which enables users to journal their lives (by their location) and to share their ‘hooks’ or stories with friends and family.

By offering internships or becoming a mentor, you would be providing students with a global insight into your particular industry as well as gaining a talented addition to your workforce for the period of the internship.  In an increasingly competitive jobs market, enhancing the employability of our students is key to the Student Experience and improving our position in the University league tables.

Full support is available from our Careers and Employability Service to any alumni who get involved. For more information, please contact Andrew Morrison by emailing andrew.morrison@liv.ac.uk or calling +44 (0)151 794 6940.
