US students awarded scholarships
The University will welcome two postgraduate students on the prestigious University of Liverpool/USA Scholarship scheme.
Sean Frederick, a US Air Force Officer, will join the University to undertake a master’s degree in the School of Engineering on a Fulbright Scholarship, which funds the first year of postgraduate study.
Sean will study ways in which laser technology is changing the face of modern engineering during his Engineering Application of Lasers degree. In the US, as well as obtaining two undergraduate degrees simultaneously, a BSc in Engineering and a BA in Spanish, Sean led a team which designed a portable refrigeration device to aid impoverished African villages.
Katherine Buse, who is the first recipient of the Liverpool Marshall Scholarship Scheme, will be studying for an MA in Science Fiction Studies in the School of English. Katherine’s undergraduate thesis investigated ecological catastrophe in contemporary fiction and seeks to uncover the underlying beliefs that inform our culture’s response to climate change.
She has presented her work at a number of conferences, including the Modern Language Association, and was honoured by the Duke English department with the Award for Outstanding Work in American Literature and the Barbara Herrnstein Smith Award for Literary Criticism and Theory.
